TRAVELLERS
Mary Queen of Scots
(Lesley Smith - Curator of Tutbury Castle and Elizabethan Historian)
Mary Queen of Scots was held
prisoner at Tutbury Castle on four occasions and it was her first
English prison.
She left Tutbury for the last time
in 1585 when she was moved to Chartley. From there she was sent to
Fotheringhay Castle in Northamptonshire where she was executed in 1586.
Here is a chance to meet Mary
Queen of Scots, in full authentic costume, during her imprisonment at
Tutbury where she spent a lot of time reading, writing letters and doing
embroidery.

They have great appeal particularly for children as well as adults. You
may have seen them already at an arts or history festival, maybe
teaching on a school project, surprising guests at a special birthday or
meeting and greeting at a business function or promotional project. You
may even have had sight of them riding in a two-horsed landau with Mr
Brown on the box.
Severn
Valley Railway Statement (September 2004) "Sylvia (who plays Queen
Victoria) has a stunning likeness, in all respects to the Queen herself
and maintains an excellent regal aura throughout the experience. She has
an excellent knowledge of Queen Victoria's views, attitudes and whims
which she puts over in a most compelling way. All in all an experience
not to be missed

Charlie’s
Bow.
By Mark Cooper
When
I first became interested in the Longbow, it was through the enthusiastic
assistance of a gentleman by the name of Charles Warmingham, the Bow maker
and Arrowsmith to the Woodmen of Arden. After reading an excellent article
on the Woodmen of Arden about this band of brothers, I decided it was time
to take up the challenge and make my very own English Longbow, and it was
to Charlie that I turned to for his very able assistance.
His enthusiastic support, knowledge and assistance, gave me the
push that was needed in order to start the long process of building my
bow. I shall always remember
him saying when using the cleft Yew bow stave, “Make two bows at the
same time”, because his experience over the years stated that one will
break at some stage of the process. I must say that I thought it rather an
odd thing to say, but did as he suggested anyway. Needless to say, Charlie
was right – that is exactly what happened. Although both bows were
identical, one did break while I was tillering it and it was sadly
confined to the workshop in two pieces.
The pieces were not wasted as I made them into Lace Bobbins on my
lathe, so they are now a prize possession with the ladies circle, and are
making lace items.
Getting
back to my story. After several weeks of intensive shaping, sanding,
tillering and polishing, my bow was finally completed. I could not wait to
ring Charlie to tell him the news. He asked me over to shoot the bow and
it took me no time at all to meet him at the archery ground to shoot a
Clout round. After several shots I eventually achieved the outer ring at
the required distance of 180 yards – much to my amazement and with
further encouragement, was able to do this consistently. I would not say I
was a great shot, but enjoyed the pleasant experience and sense of
achievement, in making and shooting my own bow.
Over
the years that passed, I kept in touch with Charlie, and we discussed the
way of the bow and especially the making of arrows, which he was an expert
at and weighing them in shillings and pennies, was another unusual
experience for me, but on reflection, it was quite a sensible idea, as
pennies and shillings were of a known weight and by testing the
performance of the arrows, one could, with some practice, get the results
one needed to become successful.
I
digress a little though, as I wanted to tell something of the man, kind,
understanding and with a wealth of knowledge, learned at the hands of
Thompson his predecessor, he was good enough to give me a bow, with more
than sufficient cast to shoot Clout consistently, it was a Dowsen, by a
Scottish maker with a long pedigree of the fashioning of good quality
longbows, a bow which I still use today even though it is showing signs of
some age and has just started to come apart at the glue join. I will
repair this remarkable bow and will continue to use it sparingly, as this
is my only connection with Charlie that I still have, kind, considerate
and a gentleman in the finest tradition of the word. He is no longer with
us, but every time I use the bow, I think fondly of Charlie, and hope he
can see me up there, when I bend the bow in pleasant company. God Bless
Charlie - and thank you for your advice – I will remember you in my
dreams!

During the war, when ‘Uncle John’ was a small
boy, he was given an old Victorian toy ‘magic lantern’ and he used it
to give entertainment in the cellar where neighbours took refuge during
the blitz. As soon as he was
old enough, he went to work, where his first job was showing the

I have a 25-note street organ built by Alan
Pell, which is mounted on a hand cart; and a 20-note street organ by Peter
Trueman, which is carried on a shoulder strap.
Both organs are operated by perforated music-rolls.
Thus I can perform a wide range of favourite music - marches,
waltzes, Music Hall items, popular songs, light classics, folk music etc.
I have sufficient music-rolls to ensure that I can play for up to
two hours without repeating a tune.
I specialise in making music at Victorian
themed events. I am a regular
performer at such annual events as Rochester Dickens Festival, Broadstairs
Dickens Festival and Llandrindod Wells Victorian Festival. I can appear in authentic costume for any period from 1820 to
the present day, to add to the atmosphere of any themed event.
However, I can also bring an extra dimension to all fetes,
carnivals, and street festivals as well as promotional presentations and
private bookings.
In addition to being an organ grinder, I also
perform on the pipe-and-tabor. I
am able to stroll around whilst playing these instruments, so spreading
informal music throughout a large event.
I am a member of the British Organ Grinders
Association. I have public
liability insurance.

| Such
fantastic illusions as Robert Houdin’s Broomstick
Illusion where a girl appears to float in mid air suspended
only by a broom under her arm. We
also pay tribute to Harry Houdini by performing the strait
jacket escape, and Houdini’s world famous metamorphosis,
in which two members of the public are invited on stage to
check that all the apparatus, used is genuine.
Dave is tied inside a sack and placed inside a locked trunk (an
exact copy of Houdini’s original) Sue stands on top and raises
the curtain and in the blink of an eye the metamorphosis is
achieved, with a complete transformation, Dave free and Sue in the
still locked trunk.
This illusion is as baffling today as it was when Houdini first
performed it in 1893 as Houdini said, “Without a single doubt
the greatest mystery of the present time.” |
