| The origin of 'Penny Farthing' (slang!)
The correct name is 'Ordinary' or High Bike as it first was in the 1880's
THEN came 'The Safety Bike' still the same configuration we know today.

Nearly 14000 daring young people have now sat on this 52"
'Ordinary' at many venues around England. Thank you for 19 years real pleasure!
Many have taken their own picture to school for their 'Victorian Project'
Please print out my Cycle history pages, this will also help. |

This beautifully restored very early 46" Ordinary, made to
fit a teenager, was probably made by James Starley at the 'Singer' Sewing Machine factory,
Coventry. 400 were ordered to a French design for export, however the French went to war! So
here we are riding one, 140 years later!
Starley later produced the 'Rover Safety Bicycle' and became a Motor Car manufacturer
of repute. |
